Rising in the dark morning
Sun light still hours away
The daily chores list already fills his head
Fence to be mended
Cattle to be moved
Horses needed shoes
Water tanks scrubbed
Cowboys getting their pay
All the things he has to see too before the end of the day.

The rancher shakes his head
Just another days work needing done
Stepping into the kitchen
He sees his wife standing at the stove
Her hair clipped back cooking breakfast for him
Humming softly to the radio
The ranchers knows she has a day just as long as his
He sits there pondering while he eats his eggs
Over the quiet dignity she carries with her through out the day
Accepting the work knowing what has to be done.

Before he steps out the door
He kisses and holds her tight
Knowing that without her his life wouldn’t be right
He’d just be a cowboy, a drifter at that
Never settling down or having kids or a ranch
For it’s her who brings him meaning
A start to each new day.

Well done! Excellent portrait of the rancher and his wife.

Been there and done that. Excellent write that captures the savor of a passing way of life.
