I can remember

I can remember
From the age of about ten
You were a frequent part of my life
When from over sea you came
To live your life here with us

I can remember
Visits to your house
You would have lollies
As well as hugs waiting
I loved visiting Nan

I can remember
In summer you would
Come to our house for a swim
I’d always swim with you
Playing games in the pool

I can remember
Growing up
You were always there
When I’d do something
Special I didn’t have to look far
For your smile

I can remember
The sadness on your face
The day you lost your one
The tears you cried
Touched my soul

I can remember
How independent
You became after
Always out and about
Nothing was slowing you down

I can remember
Your smiles
When your great grandchildren came
You played like you did
When we were young

I can remember
The love
You gave me
How much it meant
When I needed it

I can remember
Every Christmas
I’d collect you
Take you to my parents
Where you’d have so much fun

I can remember
How I felt when
I found out
You had a fall
And in hospital you were

I can remember
Visiting you
How different you
Looked and spoke
Frail and disorientated

I can remember
When they called
And told me you had a stroke
How the tears ran
Down my cheeks

I can remember
Our last visit
Wishing you were better
Seeing you weren’t
Saying goodbye

I can remember
The call when
I was told you had passed
My tears flowed for hours
Thinking of you

I can remember
The day I had to
Say goodbye seeing you
There in your coffin
Crying constantly

I can remember
My Nan
A special woman
Who I loved dearly
One I miss immensely

I was deeply moved by your fond remembrances of your grandmother. I have similar, poignant memories of both of my nanas. You just brought them lovingly back to mind. I am smiling through my tears.

Julie, it is those remembers that we live
for after all else is gone.  And it is
the remembers that we leave behind for those
like ourselves who follow...

It's a beautiful memory Julie and it made me remember my Nana. Ah, the wonderful women we came from. Thank you for this poem.

"I can remember"

in the end, that is what there is.
