As a kid, I'd sit for hours
staring at the T.V. screen;
Riding with the Cartwrights,
tag along with Roy and Gene.
With gunslingers, thieves and rustlers;
The Duke and I would duke it out.
With a hardy "Heigh-Ho Silver!"
I would ride Mom's broom about.

I'd hear his boot heels hit the porch
about the time the sun went down;
His hands were hard and callused
and his skin was leather brown.
All my range riding heroes
couldn't measure up to size.
Daddy was the "King of the Cowboys"
in my eyes.

He showed me how to shoot a gun
and how to hold the reins.
He taught me how to make a stand
and how a man stands up to pain.
He told me tales about his trails
and sang me Texas Lullabies.
Daddy was the "King of the Cowboys"
in my eyes.

He taught me how to yodel
and how to travel by the stars.
He taught me how to court the gals
and how to play my ol' guitar.
He said, "If you can't walk alone
you'll never travel far."
"It dont matter where you're headed
if you cant make it where you are."

Daddy threw his saddle
on a horse he couldn't ride.
By the time that he was dusted off,
he was busted up inside.
The horse was black and ugly
and left good cowboys sick and pale.
The "King of the Cowboys"
reached the end of his trail.

Whoop-ty Ti Yi Yay
Gather 'round boys
My daddy was the "King of the Cowboys"
One hell of a man and I'm riding for the brand.
My daddy was the "King of the Cowboys".

I don't always have time to say it but I love your work.  You poems are like music to my ears and I love the stories in poetry form.  You are a real cowboy I can tell

"It dont matter where you're headed
if you cant make it where you are."

Yes, that alone is a worthwhile bit of wisdom to take with you through life!  Thoroughly enjoyed your words! Thanks!

You paint a picture that's very close to my own life. It's good to find that there are others who know the western way of life.
