She was only five
Learned her colors from her mommy’s eyes
Blue, black, purple, green and yellow
The hues of bruises
Left by fists and needles
Scars hidden from prying eyes
By long sleeves of ruses

Mommy drinks to forget
Parties on without a trace
Of tears for the tears
On her baby’s face
Fear of herself
Fear of failure
Holds Mommy’s hand around a bottle
That never fed her child

She was only five
When they took her away
Gave her a home that is safe
They taught her to pray
Told her God loves her
And they do too
But she misses her mommy
To this very day

Mommy made promises never kept
Little girl tears were silently wept
She’s growing up quickly
Mommy’s missing it all…
Most of the time she’s
Too drunk to call
And her daughter’s heart
Is slowly turning to stone

She was only twelve
When trouble started
But when asked she can’t say why
Day by day keeps passing by
At this time of her life
She should feel beautiful
When instead she believes
She isn’t worthy of the love
She’s been given and received

She’s with the wrong crowd
She’s cursing out loud
And drifting away from home
Those who care are now aware
She’s smoking and drinking
God in Heaven
What is she thinking

How could she suppose
Thatthe sins of the mother
Are hers to re-pay
By one more drink or
Even one short day
Of feeling she’s guilty
Of an anger she can’t control

She feels it in her gut
If she’s not good enough
For an inebriated mess
How could she ever
Be anything less
Than what her nightmares
Taught her she’d be…
Mommy’s Little Bad Girl
Worst branch on the family tree

Yet time will prove
That mountains are moved
By her mustard seed of faith
That before and after
Any sins are committed
She was healed by the stripes
Of an amazing grace

Her life will rebound
God’s blessings surround
When she dreams of things to come
Home is the place
She’ll learn the right ways
Someday proof of that faith
Will reveal itself as that grace
As the light that shines
in her beautiful eyes
Reflects in her own daughter’s face

Caroline~
The delicate sensitivity of this piece is poignant~

I hope to read and re-read it ... and with your permission, share it with a small group of pre-teens that I mentor~
(Let me know if that's all right with you)
