This was written almost 2 years before Flicka died.  He had been my beloved, one-and-only horse for 18 and a bit years (at that stage - I was his for 20½ in total and knew him well for 2 years before that).  (I am a one-horse woman.)

SOULMATES
22 December 2000

The night is alive
with other horses
in other stables
and I have stopped my flow
of conversation with you
and you are munching your hay
and,
with my nose buried in your mane
and my arms lightly around your majestic neck,
I hold my breath
for I love to listen to each melodious munch.
Your kind brown eyes
wash me in their warmth
and I am caught up in the river of your love;
and horror and fear, anger and indignation
dissipate
and there is a two-way stream of consciousness
between you and me
that flows into one
and you become human
and I become horse
and we are rich
and your goodness lifts us
to a plane where there is
only
a celestial rill of pan flute music
and warmth and light
the colour of harmony
the balance of yin and yang
and you and me
and me and You.

I am a no-horse man....but I have a feeling that with you as a guide, I wouldn't be one for long.

Giggles, Ed.  You are so right.  In fact, if you had met my horse, you would have fallen in love with him instantly - as all horse-haters and horse-fearers did (that is not to say that I think you are a horse-hater nor a horse-fearer), not to mention horse-lovers!  He adored all people, all animals, very especially dogs and cats.  He even had a duck sleeping in his stable by choice for many months at one stage and a cat at another - neither the duck nor the cat ever slept in another stable.

When I was a kid (around 5), a horse spit at me; after that I didn't like horses anymore. But when I found out that it was a llama and not a horse that fired spit at me, I liked horses again, lol. Great poem Owl, I know what it’s like to lose a pet.      – Ed

Giggles Ed, but the sad facts are that now you probably don't like llamas!  And what a pity!  There are those such as I, who have never had the extreme delight of meeting a llama - and imagine the poor darling llama's feelings that you hurt.  He probably didn't mean it aggressively - he probably needed to spit and you were in the way.  Or perhaps he was badly treated as a llamalet (forgive the word, but it was fun making it up).

Thanks Ed (Grim) for understanding about losing my darling horse.  He was 37½ very healthy and happy years mature when he went to Heaven.  It is nearly 4 years ago (it will be on 28 April this year) and I am still and always will be lost without him.

Diana.....As one who has known connection with animals and birds, I understand your love and soul connection with your dear horse, Flica.  I believe you will ride again one day, together across the meadows of heaven.

Oh, Martie, so do I!  It is so heart-warming to know that somebody else also believes that and not just because I mentioned it first.  I will get to meet your canary too, because I am sure that Flicka has found (him/her - I can't remember which), and as I believe you will meet your canary too, that means that I will meet you too!

This is magnificent... the bond between a human and an animal friend is something I know well. I love horses, though I never have the opportunity to be around them. There was one, years ago - his name was Wild Turkey - and he was beautiful. I loved him instantly. He wasn't mine, I never rode him, but I spent several days caring for him. I still miss him.  I can see you with your Flicka and it is a wonderful picture.

Thank you so much Caroline.  I see the picture of Flicka and me together through your eyes.

You would have adored Flicka if you had met him.

That must have been a wonderful experience with Wild Turkey.  If you ever see him again, give him a big hug from me, please.

Diana, your poem brings your Flicka to life.
How dear that he had a duck and a cat for
roommates.

Flicka will be so pleased to see
you at the Rainbow Bridge. How he
will dance and the two of you shall
ride as one again.

Hugs to you...

The Rainbow Bridge!  What a beautiful concept!

Yes, if only you could have seen how happy he was to see me every day when he was alive (not to mention how happy I was to see him). I can't wait to meet him again.  I am glad you could see him in life in my poem.

Never had a horse, but I had a dog once.  Soulmates...  I understand.

I never thought of horse and rider as one before, but now I do.  Neat.

Thank you Uriah for reading Flicka so well.  I am honoured that you think my heart is right too, but, being human, it isn't always.  Flicka's always was/is.  I am going to keep the quote.  I had a friend, a long time ago, who had the book, "Imitations of Christ" and she referred to it a lot.

Buttons, thank you for your response and understanding.  I once went a short while without animals and I thought I was going to go off my head.

I had a horse when I was very young maybe 12. The people who owned him sold him to my dad for 20 dollars because they couldn't ride him. I was the only who ever could, his name was Prince. He was a beauty! Thanks for bringing that memory back after all these years. :-)

Oh, Steven - what a beautiful memory!  I am so happy that I could have brought back that for you  - especially the implication of your being the only one who could ride Prince - my suspicion is that how well you rode was only part of the story, and that the most important part was that you bonded with Prince and because you understood, trusted, respected and loved each other.  There was a horse in my distant past (not mine, but at a riding establishment) called Sue (short for A Man Named Sue) and I could get him to do things that far better riders than I couldn't do because we understood, trusted, respected and loved each other.  Thank YOU for bringing back the memory of that wonderful bond.

Thank you for living and loving my poem.  I wrote a similar one to my darling Tigger cat, entitled My Little One, but that has now disappeared on to page 2.  I also wrote one about my dog, Daisy (posted some time ago called My Little Snow-white Golden Girl), whom I have had for nearly 2 years – I got her from a client whose house I sold when they left South Africa for New Zealand - they wanted me to take their cat as well, but I couldn't because Tigger wouldn't have accepted another cat - I found a wonderful home for Mo, though – but I took Daisy and what a delight she has been.  What an cold, empty world this would be without animals!

Of course I love this, I'm sorry I missed it before (my bad, I know )!

One...   I've had to train all my horses from the ground up, and it's taken years, but I'm starting to experience that Oneness.

It's exquisite

and then He created the horse...

Thank you Skyfire.  It's a wonderful thing that bond and worth all the pain and tears of missing him.  I am just so very, very grateful that it is I that was left alone, and not him.

Thank you Tracie.  I am glad you enjoyed it.

Oh, Earth Angel, I adore anyone who misses (thus loves) my horse!  Thank you for the tears (smiles).  I WWWWWWWIIIIIIIISSSSSSSSSSHHHHHH you could have met him.  You would have loved each other.  He adored every person and animal he ever came across (especially me, of course!) and they all adored him.

Thank you Suthern.  You are an extremely warm, kind, compassionate person.  Thank you for calling Flicka a beautiful, loving friend.  That earns you my undying gratitude!
