I was high from the wine that I drank from your lips
and did not know that you were poisoning me.
I grew weak 'neath the touch of your fiery fingertips
and in the dark I was too blind to see...
All the demons of Hell, helping you cast your spell;
leaving me too weak to fight.
The flames just grew higher from the heat of desire
and forged a chain out of one cheating night.
Now I'm shackled with guilt, watching your flower wilt
in the light of a new rising sun.
There's no breaking free from this prison in me,
where I'll lock away all that we've done.
How long can I hide the dark secret inside ?
Can I bury you, without leaving a trace?
Can I hold my head high when I look in her eyes
or will the weight of it show on my face?
Somehow the morning revealed all the thorns
that I thought held a rose in the night.
I left you, still snoring and slipped out the door,
shielding my eyes from the light.
My head was exploding but somehow I drove
and I guess I should thank God I'm home.
But crashing and dying seems easier than lying
and praying that the truth's never known.
Have your way with my soul,
when I cash my chips in.
I'll trade the fire below
for the hell that I'm in.
But show mercy Lord,
if I awake before I die...
Never let my wife know...
Dear Lord, help me lie.

Without wanting to sound harsh or "holier than thou", if this is autobiographical, I believe you are right in taking the pain and saving your wife from it.  I think it is good that you have taken the responsibility upon yourself with no excuses for yourself.

Silly me!  Looking at the title, I don't think this is autobiographical, but either way, I think you have hit the nail on the head with what Terry's course of action should be.
