Bernie loved the women and he loved to feed his head;
His candle burned out somewhere between the two.
I never figured he'd grow old, but he's too young to be dead;
Just 'cause it's printed doesn't guarantee it's true.
But, his family is sad and grieving and your daughter's safe at home;
I guess I need to face up to the fact.
I can handle Bernie leaving 'cause he always loved to roam;
The hard part's knowing he aint coming back.

Looking back upon the fast track that we both used to run;
So much to do and so much to be seen;
All the physical abusing that we thought was so much fun;
So well seasoned, for us being so darned green.
Those were sure some good times, full of lessons to be learned;
I learned enough to leave it all behind.
Now it's all just so much water, under bridges that I've burned.
I always hoped you'd find some peace of mind.

Old friends talk about you, using words like "rogue" and "thief";
How their earthly treasures were just knick-knacks that you sold
For money spent on carnal pleasures and elixers for relief;
Sacraments to soothe your tortured soul.
They smiled and called you "brother", when your wine was flowing free;
And they speak of "HELL" now that your bell has tolled.
Yes, your head had sticky fingers, but you never took from me;
'Though my life has lost a little of its gold.

Little brother, take the high road.  You've had your taste of Hell;
Seeking comfort in the cold, dark world you found.
Now let the bright light lead you.  Let your spirit rest a spell.
I'll see you, soon as my turn rolls around.

An honest tribute.

I hope someday you get the chance to live like you were dying....

Exquisite, highly sensitive and reverent in its clean reality!  I am sorry for your loss of a close friend.  Thank you for mourning him as I am sure he would like to be thought of.
