Here I stand...
at an intersection...
Thumb, protruding from fist.
Going through...
A commuter inspection...
Here, in the morning mist.
Some honk their horns...
Some wave a hand...
Cold and forlorn...
Here I stand.

The keepers of the payment books,
In morning rush to keep new cars...
Cast frightened, sometimes scornful looks,
That to self esteem, can maim and mar.
Their schedule eludes lending a hand.
The thumb still protrudes...
and still...
Here I stand...

Mortgages, boats and dreams still afar...
Their shoes blister and designer ties choke.
The worriers scramble about in their cars...
Seeing me as a threat or a joke.

Ah !
A rare and brave scrambler...
Grants a warm hearted smile;
A tailor-made smoke;
And a couple of miles.

Too soon
the ride ended;
With sincere shaking of hands;
My perspective has mended;
And again...
Here I stand...

What a cool tale to tell... while I hope you don't really hitchhike (its so dangerous now) I love the thought of being out on the road without the baggage that all those people carry in briefcases and ipods, and waiting for one like soul to stop and say hop in.

I enjoyed this poem there's nothing so free as a hitchhiker.  But unfortunately people tend to shun hitchhikers nowadays.
