in the morning
the bony old yellow cat
demands his breakfast
before my eyes are coffee open
then
he lies in the sun
and sleeps

he eats when I do
taking food from my plate
not sharing his with me
no small talk
just the sound of his crunching

he scratches himself
when and where he pleases
he smells bad
his toenails need to be cut

at night he is in bed early
he sleeps at the foot
his back to me
no cuddling
no goodnight kisses
just a cold shoulder

thank God I’m not married

You may think you are not married, but the cat may disagree!

Loved your poem, and your cat even more.  However, you were wrong about one thing, (smile).  Your cat doesn't smell.  You just think he does because there is something wrong with your sense of smell.  I hope you haven't told him he smells as that would hurt his feelings.

Giggles at icebox's reply!

Kate, I would love to ask you to give your cat kisses and cuddles, but you say he doesn't like them, so please tell him that he sounds wonderful and full of character.

Thank you so much aujussy wolf.

Glad you liked the ending Sir Sy.

Ahhh…icebox, the cat knows I am married, the rascal.

Diana, I kiss and love these furry ones all the time… but they both refuse to be touched in bed. Who knows? Cats are their own people.

And icebox’s record stands Martie. He’s right again. Cats are awesome, aren't they?

Lester, this shining example of a cat’s name is George. Thank you for asking.

Being a cat person, I have to tell you I sure understood this one!  I like to think I own this cat, but I know darn well she knows she owns me.   I loved this - so typical of the little hairballs isn't it?

A good question Klassy Lassy. I
think a cat would keep you.
Thanks for the read.

LOL. Right Linda! The whole pot
is mine... unless the cat starts
drinking coffee.  Hugs to you.

Glad my cat “tail” made you smile
Nancy. Hugs.

Oh yes, Mysteria! That hairball
does own you. You know the
saying. “Dogs have masters…
cats have staff.” Worse yet,
we feel privileged to serve.

Ha ha, some of these lines sounded like MY cats (although mine are fairly friendly). One of them is on my lap right now, wanting to be petted. But is he around when I want a cat to cuddle? Of course not. Gotta love 'em, though.

Mine is female... and bony black instead of yellow (or was... parts of her have turned gray)... but how I know this wakeup call! *S* There is no question who's boss at my place! LOL

But she's ancient and failing... so each day I get to serve is a privilege. *S*

I enjoyed this very much!

Perfect.  My cats both approve and insisted that I print this and have it ready for them to lie on whenever they desire to do so!
