yesterday
I took the hyacinth bulbs
from the refrigerator
hardened
sprouting

I dug holes
and sat their fat
bottoms
in the garden
two straight rows of round
green tipped soldiers
bathe in the sun I told them
     and grow purple

this morning
I opened the window
to find my troops
standing steadfast
in the cold rain

I love this poem.

It is very hard to write a poem about flowers without making it all sloppy and overly pretty.

It is a fine line, but you managed to stay on the right side of it.

(Thanks for not making the flower a Rose)

Thank you so much smithdr. I don't do sloppy very well. I just thought those hyacinth bulbs must have been very surprised by that chilly rain.

There was something
bitter...hmm..no that's not the word I wanted to use...oh well.
There was something bitter in this poem about flowers,
that I just absolutely loved.

Lady, it was almost as if I stood there at the window with you for a moment gazing on the little troops in the rain.  Liked this a lot!   ...jo

Yes!  I love this - saw and felt it all.

Did you notice me there beside you, getting my knees and hands deliciously earthy, helping to plant the bulbs?  Was still asleep when you peeped out the window, though.  I'm glad the hyacinths were fine and had you to talk them through the chilly rain and will have you to bring them to their royal purple in their time.

Thank you exhale. I think this poem was not just about flowers.

Hope, thank you for your response.

Jo, I wondered who that was at the window with me. Thank you.

Oh yes Diana, I saw you digging in the dirt. My little round soldiers and I thank you so much.

Love this!

I love this~~ and it brought me a wonderful memory of when I first began gardening - my purple hyacinths rose beautifully in the flower box on the porch - smelled like heaven - and must have smelled too good. The next day they were gone, our new dog having bits of purple petal stuck to his bulldoggy lips LOL -
He's my sweet sensitive one - loves all my flowers - eats my camellia buds right off the bush. Lil Brat!!

Yes - I see more than flowers here, too.

Thank you my dear Page. I always appreciate your responses.

Oh Caroline... what I would have given to see the purple petals on the bulldoggy lips. He sounds a bit like Ferdinand the bull. I love your story. Thanks for sharing it! Thanks for your reply too.
