Southern trees bear strange fruit,
Blood on the leaves and blood at the root,

          ~ Abel Meeropol

when Nina sang it
you believed it
you knew it was real
not a folk tale

minds filled with pictures
shadows of old men kneeling
women wiping their hands on aprons
as if to loose the blood
children’s heads covered with
patched crazy quilts
dogs under porches
cowering

when Nina sang it
you felt it
it became your history

men whispered in fields
daring not to be heard
not to walk outside the corn rows
or mule traces
wives handed their men cool water
touched their hands
with questions
mothers turned their eyes from their sons
afraid to love them
prayed them home at night

when Nina sang it
hearts could not cry
the pain was at the root
far too deep for tears

When Nina sang it, everyone believed it.  When Kate writes it, everybody is enthralled!

Kate,

I read this the other day
when you first posted it.

It's impact on me was, in a small word,
awesome.

Thank you.
