Caught Red-Handed

“You eat with your eyes first you know?
That is why it is I do what it is I do.
I create these ice cream delights with love,
Just to see happy faces on both of you two.”

Three dishes sitting on my counter,
Each the same as the one beside.
I ate the final odd cherry in the jar
Surely that would be easy to hide.

“Gram? I think you gave her two cherries
And if you look, you gave me only one?”
I smiled and said, “Honey …trust me,
Your Gram isn’t close to even being done.”

Wide eyed they watched that whipping cream,
Mound on chocolate mountains high,
I had to chuckle at their intense anticipation,
The sheer joy twinkling in each youthful eye.

I hid more cherries inside your dish
You each got just exactly the same.
“But where did that big one go Gram?”
I really did feel a little bit of shame.

“Well ... see I’m the cook and I have to test,
Making sure it all tastes really good you see?
I do that so I’m absolutely, positively sure,
The sundaes will please both of you and me.”

“Oh Gram! That may have worked when I was 4,
I’m 7, kind of smart, and a whole lot older.”
Good grief!  She had caught me “red-handed,”
Laughing, I reached out to squeeze and hold her.

Kids!

This is so much fun to read.  I can actually visualize the entire scene you've created here.  Any chocolate sauce to add to my sundae???

believe in what your heart feels...

I have read this several times and here's what I think... grandchildren give us such wonderful opportunities to show love and I want a sundae!

It's just wonderful!

Darn ... the older they get the smarter they get - next thing you know I won't be getting to lick the beaters on the mixer anymore.   They are my joy those two!  Thanks for sharing with me.

Sharon,
Fun write. I can picture it happening. You are the bestest grama. And I think it's time I came for a visit too.

If tears could build a stairway and memories a lane,
I'd walk right up to heaven and bring you home again.

hahaha!  loved this. It makes me think of the mom who was trying to teach her children to share portions evenly...the rule was that the cook always had to give the biggest portion to somebody else.  Smart mom...the treats evened up very quickly.

But I think Grams are entitled to the extra cherry!

Dear Mysteria~

Your poetry, be it happy or sad, is the true essence of living life to the fullest.
Your thoughts constantly overflow with a special kind of love that is contagious.
Like the good fairy or somethin', I mean it.

So thanks for being so generous with the star dust, it goes a long way!!!

That was about the nicest thing anyone has ever said to me, and if I can bring you a smile, then that is for sure living life to the fullest (which is my motto.)   Thank you so much for such a sweet comment.
