my grandmother
buried
my birth cord
at the corner of the house
she said it would bind my heart
to the red clay
the pine trees
woman whose body I once shared
tall sugar man
who they say
was my father
she said it would bind me
to a way of life
my family

my birth cord
could not keep my mother
from dim bars
hungry men
it could not keep my father
from sitting
empty glove hands on knees
turning from me
talking to himself

my birth cord
bound me to the red clay
to my family
but
families are only bony knees
we long to sit on
and they’re always so damned uncomfortable

::smiles::  Excellent !!!   I have my little library of those I have saved.  So many of them were written by you, that I started a seperate "Lady" folder.  Your writings are always delightful and among those that I aspire to be as good as , when I grow up.

Why Uriah, what a lovely thing to say. I think you are an exceptional poet even now  as a youngster.

Thank you tracie, LeeJ and Stranger!

Kate I love this poem, hate your pain and emptiness, and am relieved that you are strong, courageous, tranquil-spirited and always smiling.
