as shots rang out,
and the raging fires burned

over the fires
the dog leapt,
beyond the moment of no return

as she was trained to go
into the thick of it

she, the Malinois dog

devoted, well trained,
determined

to protect, defend,
to capture the enemy

her handler in waiting
banking his life
on her expected response

and she does not fail him,

this four legged soldier

*in honor of the Belgian Malinois http://www.belgianshepherds.com/
BTW, this has absolutely NOTHING to do with the Belgian shepherd dog or the soldier that you might be reading of in the news. It's about working search and rescue dogs...highly trained dogs which go to any extreme to protect and rescue.

Thanks, friends! I sure wish I could get a Malinois pup from Baden training center, but they are out of my price range. My daughter 'rescued' a three month old shepherd/pit bull female from the local pound yesterday, and is in the process of puppy 'housebreaking' and basic training to see if this gal can be around the horses daily. So far, Taiga seems to be a smart little gal, very responsive, with a great personality. She barked at the horses this morning, and cocked her head sideways trying to figure out what these creatures were, and if they would be friend or foe. I'm sure they are thoroughly checking her out today as well.
*sigh* back to an occasional puddle or doodle on the floor for a few days until she learns the house rules
