Reflections Of The Past
By Paul Wilson

Calloused hands tell the story
like pages in a book
Another chapter complete
in this life of mine
Clock has no hands
to mark passage of time

Broken bones and heart
take their toll on me
Singing the blues with Mr. Daniels
every night
just my memories
for company

Fields of white
far as the eyes can see
Three black women and me
twenty more acres left to pick
I need a drink of water
mista boss man

Working for the man
I’ve lived my life
thru my fathers eyes
The whiskey soothes my pain
the blues soothes my soul
as I play one more song

I’d run away tonight
to a better place if I could
I’d swim the river deep and wide
just to see what’s on the other side
Soon the sun will be rising
another day of hell will begin

Masters whip leaves
it’s mark on me
He caught me sleeping
after the rooster crowed
Get up slave there’s twenty more acres
of cotton too pick today

Sing the blues sing em’ slow
broken bones and spirit
for my sacrifices
all I have too show
Sing me a song Mista
play those blues real slow

Now Paullie, you know the way to my heart if through the blues, and if you throw some sour mash whiskey in there yer gonna get a caterwallin' Karen, too!

That Mississippi Delta is looking good on you.

And you, m'friend, I admire you so much, as you aren't afraid to try different styles, and man, but they look good on you, too.

I know you work at your poetry, but the end result looks effortless.

*beaming at you*

Now give us a kiss!

I could almost see the sun coming up, blazing hot
in the wee hours of the morning.... you pretty much took me there.

Wonderful story telling, Paul~

Karen...Glad you liked this.
I just want you too know that you are the reason that I try different styles of writing.

Actually most of my poems come pretty easy. I just pull up a blank page on the computer and let my mind and heart take over. Most of the time it only takes about 20 minutes to write a poem.

Thanks again for all you do and for being a teacher...Paul

Reads like a book, Paul!
I think even Mark Twain would be very proud of this one...

Great story, excellent work!!
One of your best.

Fabulous! You sure can tell a story and make it look like a movie. I loved the imagery.

JL...Thanks for your generous reply. I imagine old Mark Twain seen plenty and wrote many stories of the old South that got lost over the years. Thanks again for reading...Paul

Misty Lilacs...So glad you enjoyed this story. I really enjoy trying too tell stories within my poems and I often times try to see things thru the eyes of people that have lived the story...Paul

I could feel the pain in his back, the sun on his head and the blues in his heart Paul. You write well.

I love the blues and would like nothing more than to be able to write some songs.
