Some things last for an instant.
Like lightning,
or a stubbed toe.
The pain when you rip off a band aid
Or jar your funny bone.

Some things destroy in a second
Like a broken neck,
A broken promise,
A gun shot.
That second you realise
A belief you've held true your whole life
Has always been a farce.

And some things last forever.
Like love.
Non biodegradable plastic bags,
And starlight.

But some things linger:
A lover's cologne on your clothes...
Smoke's pungeant odour after the candle goes out...
The softest kiss or whisper...

The spirit of a poet
whose words are read,
long after they're gone.

The soul would have no rainbows, had the eyes no tears.
