My first teaching job was in Georgia.   I was without a car until my present husband, brought my car from Ohio to me.    The only money he had, he carried in a gallon penny jar.  He has taught me as much about character and sacrifice as anyone could. I have been truly blessed by all in my life.

          ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
(Then, I had the class from yell, but I loved them just the same.
I had just gotten my car a day earlier
           Kenneth’s Lesson
I waited and waited months, you see
For my car and faithful key, but yet
Upon its arrival, a six-year old stole from me.
Beside myself I cringed and cried
That evil, even in a child resides
But I still loved my Kenneth.
About the keys, a lesson learned
From wise Ohio Mother-Bird.
She told me the loss of car
    To share with children not a word.
So (in silence) I hitched a ride to school again
There sat Kenneth with a grin
Front tooth missing; he tapped his chin.
“Teacher, you missin’ something?”
“Hm.  Now what would I be missing?”
“Maybe these?” and from a file
He pulled out my keys.
The little stinker, the little dear
Brings back memories from that Georgia year!
“Teach them to learn to read and write
Show them how to spell, but
More importantly,” Mama Bird said to me,
“Teach them what they need in life.
Teach them about character…”
I told her, they already had character!
Those little scamps!!!
Then profound advice she gave for free.
       “Character is when you do the right thing
       When no one is looking.
        Tell them, tell them you found the key
         To love, trust, and respectability.”
    Well, I can’t say I taught it right
    But I’m an optimist that something,
     Someday
     Will  come to light.
    And with the darkness I close this night
     With thoughts of another, in prayer I hold so tight.
      My heart stolen, eyes swollen.
      Another lesson learned.
God love ya, Misc'e.  I remember when that happened and how your hubby gathered pennies to rescue you.  I'm sure there was something learned by that little boy, too.  Love you....jo
Came back to add that I think this is a great poem, sweetie.
I hope so; I loved the little scamp!  I'm
a-dokey-o.k.
luv and hugs,
and Jo, I came back to add, "Always a teacher--"
Sometimes, I detest always doing the right thing, but... think of the alternatives!  I'm just too analytical!   Yep!  Must be Dad's chemical engineering personality peeking out in me.  People think I'm scattered, but I'm extremely logical, I suppose.  Maybe even a little smart, not a lot, but perhaps, a little.
love you, Big Sis!
Yep, I suppose.  I tend to sense what the kids need, call it intuition... The basics are:  I just like to have fun!   We do some really silly things in some of my classes, but then I get down to business.  I guarantee you, the silly stuff is purposeful and effective.  It is a most rewarding profession (most of the time).
Yes, martyjo.  You're right, but the lessons never seem to become any easier.  Only more difficult.  I've always liked challenges though.  Some better than others...
Thank you for your comment.  It means a lot to me.
What a touching write!
Teaching is such a rewarding profession. Not only do the children learn from their teachers, but teachers can learn also learn from their students.
My oldest daughter will be finishing her Master's degree in education this year (while she has been teaching full time). She relates so many heart-warming stories to me about her students.
I have always held the teaching profession in high regard. Teachers play a very important role in both the present and the future of our society.
As teachers give ~ we all receive!
God bless you!
Hugs with love,
Linda
My sister is a teacher... and I couldn't help but think about her classroom kids as I read this. *S* They know all about people yelling... whether they've done anything wrong or not... but... someone expecting them to do the right thing without ear-twisting is a new world for them... Maybe it was for Kenneth, too... and you gave him that chance to do right... on his own. And in return, you got a smile you'll never forget. *S*
Beautiful write, dear lady. *S*
you have truly been blessed, and so happy to see that you are greatful for your life together, realizing his worth, and how he's compliemented your life, as I'm certain, you have his....
this needs to go back to the top, so everyone can read a happy couple's realization, in the gifts before them.
Hugs you and thank you
I thought I replied to this yesterday...I know I read it and was deeply moved by the lessons within.  I was a teacher for many years, and always felt I learned more than I taught.  In a world where so many teachers burn out before they're done, I'm glad there are people like you and Kenneth!!
