i dreamed of you a couple nights ago
rolling joints with the pages of your bible
you called them your little revelations
as you danced barefoot in the gospel
that was the summer the construction workers
took to prowling on every turnpike
the speeding fines got higher around the same time
every street began to look alike

the heat made us go mad but the suburbs were worse
so we'd spend nights in airport baggage claim
claiming baggage that wasn't ours
letting the park bench take the blame
and you said i'd love the stars like i love the planes
if i knew them half as well
but here it rains on everything
and the city starts to swell

and we're racing the sun to the atlantic
when we realize there's nothing left
so we stop midway through the afternoon
stalled, stranded, motionless
but we need to kiss the horizon
so we'll sell our clothes for gas
drive naked into another day screaming
free at last.

america is a gas station parking lot
how many people are running on empty
yeah this place an ancient morphine drip
but the medicine doesn't help any
and somewhere a bright red telephone rings
though freedom no longer does
and somewhere the statue of liberty boards
a midnight greyhound bus

and we're fighting sleep in the back row
when she shuffles down the aisle
we left our baggage on the sidewalk
she left her heart in ellis island
and there's nothing but sweet irony
in the mirrored window glass
and as we fade into a dream
we can hear her singing
free at last.

Life can be so hard....you have painted life in a way that not enough understand and too many experience.  Your poem made me want to reach out to you (if this is about your life)...I hope you are ok.

can't take a whole lot of time to reply to this, for which I apologize, but I did at least want to express my appreciation for this write - the tone, the grammar/wording and the undulating process it walks through were well done and captivating. there were a couple of statements teetering on the edge of cliche (shaker at the stars was one, though it does make for a very cool literal image).

all in all, this was muchly appreciated. i'll keep an eye out for more of your work.
