In no man’s land
Among the debris
Of lives loves gone wrong
He makes his way

Beneath the stars
False fires
Dimly light the field

It would be safer
To stay behind the lines
Or better yet back at home
With music books encased in art
Armored with sophistries

Yet there he goes
To nothing more likely
Than further wounds
To beard the lion
In its den

For friends he knew
Who were lost out there
Because the heart they made in him
Refuses to be dead
