MY SOLITUDE, I ADORE YOU
- AN ODE
21 July 1983

Here in the living depth of this tranquil night,
Warm in the haven of your gentle arms,
I answer the call in your deep, true eyes.

Oh, my Solitude, accept this hymn of adoration,
For you are my strength, my friend, my confidant;
With you my thoughts run wild and free;
You share my bursting joys
And my aching sorrows.
You have taught me how
To smile,
To weep.
You forgive my angers
And my follies.
You let me love you without restraint.
I hurt you with my hate, and yet
You take me back without reproach.

You know me better than any
And I am part of you,
The perfect union.
You are the very essence of my life …
And …
How can I but love/hate you,
Knowing that
At Death’s release,
You will
Share
My improbable peace?

Owl, I am honored to be the first to comment on this. Just like I am honored to have read this. All of your poetry captures the truth, especially this one. I love this piece. I thank you for the pleasant read. Cheers   - Ed

Number two seems like just as proud a position for this Ed....this is excellent, and it makes me happy I came here this evening.

How about two Eds and one Martie...I also think this poem is great, Owl!  There is so much truth in your words....and this poem is one that I wish I'd written.

I had to read this one out loud, it's eloquence demanded to be heard.  Loved it.

Thanks Ed and Ed.  I am very honoured by your feeling honoured.  And yes, giggles, two 'eds are better than one, though each is very worthy and wonderful in his own right!  Glad you both enjoyed it.

Thanks Martie and Skyfire, for your wonderful responses too.  It makes me sad for your own sakes that you both related to it so well.

Thanks RedStone.  I am glad that it spoke to you.

Thanks wanderingin (hope you won't wander away - this is a wonderful poetry forum to be a part of).  I am very honoured that you found it eloquent.  I feel that all poetry comes into its own when read aloud.  I used to go to a poetry-reading group which was held once a month.  Then the woman who ran it left Durban.  I went to another, but it eventually died as a result of lack of support.  I miss that so much, especially as I no longer teach and can bring poetry-reading into my teaching.

It does my heart good to know that a poem of mine born, bred and posted in South Africa, was read aloud in some far country (I guess America) and was thought to be eloquent.  Thank you wanderingin.

Owl, I am American, (can you tell? ) but live/work in Europe.  Eloquence indeed!  Truly inspiring.  I am still a teacher.... I hope to use these modern poems to inspire young minds.  What hope I've found in this world of words so far.  Keep them coming.  I could just drown in here!!!

wanderingin, I couldn't actually tell that you were American in the short time you have been with us, but I assumed that you were, as most in this forum are (although there are quite a few us who aren't).

What part of Europe are you in?  I hope you are enjoying being there.  It is wonderful to hear of a teacher who enjoys inspiring pupils.  It is a very hard job, teaching, especially today, but a very rewarding one.

Yes, this is the best poetry forum I have ever found - not just the poetry, but the poets as people, too, are warm and welcoming.

Thank you Kate.  I am glad you enjoyed it.
