Apparently your hearing has turned rancid
while my voice catches you abruptly
mimicking stories we argued before

like last Sunday over champagne brunch
crispy bacon brittles in my hand
as we repeat the same old nursery rhyme
gazing like zombies into cold soup

the waitress, hair messed with gel and paste
fitted nicely in ironed creases
notices our banter and asks
“how long ya been t’gether”

I slumped, quietly tensed wishing it wasn’t true
10 whole years of this game
as we roll slowly backwards
grabbing at each others sentences, clinging to

heavy words filling our nostrils
with anticipation to achieve the strength
it would take to
eat this cold soup.

What a potent work this one is Page. I love the way you used "rancid."
