Forgive me... I can't remember when I've slept last. I needed to take a break from work.

Sometimes There is Silence
©2006 C.G. Ward

walked through darkness tonight,
gathering a billowy fog into my mind
to clear the pathway for consciousness.

didn’t work, ah well.

the midnight sky was there, though…
could feel it pressing down on my shoulders
like the weight of intoxication smiling crookedly
through an insipid clangor clogging the aural pores
at ye olde local pubbery.

          gotta love them drunk chicks.

but I was talking about fog and consciousness:

of the fog – there is silence.
it isn’t the near-silence of a quasi-civilized,
barely-homogenized, querulous society
saturated with the hum of refrigerators and electricity,
sirens and the incessant irritation of hormonal-infected teenaged boys
burnin’ n’ churnin’ all four wheels into the pavement at 3 am
just to “impress” the current object of their five minute lust…
(it don’t jump to fifteen ‘til they’re twenty or so)

Fog, you see, is a real silence.

it is the silence of history, and a universe that ‘supposedly’ hums
  - like the fridge.
but that’s just an analogy for the consciousness I’m a-searchin’ for, anyway,
a method by which some pretend to profundity
while sipping martinis with the rest of the ‘boomers.

this silence is real.
it is emptiness, the absence of.

I yearn for that sometimes,
but only find it in her eyes…
and only when she tells me she loves me.

C, if this is what the lack of sleep does to ya, then maybe you oughtta write everything in a sleep deprived daze.
Damn fine lines up there bud, even for this time of the morning...

You've almost captured the fog...

I just didn't feel the chill.

Good one, Son.  Very, very good.

Oh Christopher, those last lines are lovely.  I often find such beauty in this world in the oddest things that make me sad because they are so beautiful, like the fog, the silence, the eyes.

This reminded me of Trainspotting.

The words.  You know them?

The kind of lines you have to do a double take on....like a beautiful woman walking down the street..you just can't help it.

All I wanna know is how did I end up feeling so satisfied?

Rare acheivement, there, C.

We should do this more often.

beautiful glimpse into her eyes

My Mum used to say "Silence is Golden", I think this captured what she has always tried to explain.

Enjoyed,

I enjoyed the ethereal feel to this write. Your closing lines were especially appealing.

Fog you see is a real silence.  I totally agree.  As one who suffers from Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, we often experience what is called Fibro-fog.  It's as if we are awake but only physically.  Our heads seem to be in a very thick fog that we can't pull out of.  But my favourite part of your poem were the lines:
I yearn for that sometimes,
but only find it in her eyes…
and only when she tells me she loves me."
This is beautiful.  I hope "she" knows how special she is in your eyes.
