in the shadows

Like dry snow passing by,
the torn bits of telegram drifted off my fingers
into a cold uncaring sky filled with the steady bitter wind
blowing through the high desert mountains
swirling into a hundred miles of parched river canyons
scattered far below,
where life still played and hid
and scampered,
clinging to the hope that summer hadn’t really gone away.

You were dead,
it simply said a time and place,
no reason why;
once it would have brought me joy,
especially if I had been the blade
to slice your soul free from your flesh
and scrape your hide to flick the clinging shreds away.

Too many years had drifted from us both,
too many coffins counted at a distance,
too many tears of rage had flowed from your betrayal.
Yes, I felt relief even knowing that it did no good,
and the acid taste,
the cost of shadow memory,
of grief for all that could have been and had been lost
wrapped upon itself
coiled as a snake lodged in my throat,
until like the kundalini serpent in overdue release
a bellowed roar beyond coherent speech
flowed up through me from the ancient rocks on which I stood,
and split the sky in echoes.

I'm sure this was difficult to write.

I do not know the feel of dry snow passing by, but I felt this piercing...

I wish I knew how, I wish that I could, make it all better for you.

Dear Icebox,

This is my first evening at Passion.
Yours is the first poem I've read here.
It made me feel like joining in chorus, with you, in primal scream. It really worked
into a crescendo and took me with it.
Thank goodness for this type of soul cleansing expression that is poetry.
Very anticlimactically, did you mean to say "beyond coherent speech" or was "coherence" your choice?

Very best wishes,

MacPoet

When raising our kids, we used a reward chart and put it on their doors to their rooms.  When they made an achievement, we rewarded properly by adding a seal or a star to their chart on the door.  When they got enough of them, then they got a different type of reward.

Mr. C., my friend, I'm interpreting this poem as a seal on the door of personal growth showing progress...that being, letting your bottled up anger and grief come out.  What vivid imagery...painfully vivid.  It is not an easy thing to deal with strings still untied...things unresolved...baggage we can carry, try to pitch, and the porter always finds it and brings it back.  In a way like demons, those things haunt us, when really it is ourselves in not knowing where to put that stuff...I'm still working on that. If you have the answer or find it, let me know.  Or, maybe you have just put a permanent seal closing that door for good -- guess, this could be the interpretation, too.  Either way...     ...jo
