Walking out, it seemed spring;
Except birds at the feeders
Were still dressed-winter, finches
Dull-olive, not gold, end of story;
Although April was rumored
By thermometer pointers..truth was,
It was still January.

The journey to reality is not long for me;
Down  the "Catlin hollow" hard-top,
Then up the mud path, formerly gravel
(Winter thaws make stone an alias)
Ascending the "Holiday" hills into
Oz-land, where ponds in winter,
Are always as hard as yellow bricks..

Normal this, a long pull of the sled,
Like a pseudo Christ, I walk on top
Three hundred yards across, as
Fish are not in every nook of lake;
Knowing their address, is weed-street-
Ten feet down... with fire and steel
I drill holes in the roof of their house.

Eight thirty: The morning bite is slow.

Fish know secrets, that are whispered,
About coming events, that I cannot hear;
High pressure, freezes their mouths shut-
A cold-front is coming, reaction,
That my dulled human senses, can no longer feel.

But it doesn't matter, I have come to fish
And catching's not the treasure...I had
Come here for excitement, in any earth event,
And I learned quite soon, as I always do,
I would not be bored, nor wear the mask
Of disappointment...

Wind at my back, I concentrate, on rod tip-
Twitch--as cold blood fish move-eat, slow
Along the bottoms, warmer thermocline;
What's In their veins is near coagulate,
As high is thirty nine in their liquid atmosphere.

Then

I feel a change in wind, that blew from south;
That licked its warm tongue up and down my back,
But now in different mood it slaps my face,
And mother ice beneath makes groans to speak
In bass-note lines some things, her instinct knows;

Contractions tell of something being birthed,
Just inside the trees that hedge the road,
Still out of ear-reach...She gives me warning!
"The Goddess of weather, has lost her water"
In the midwife stand of pines...And As I turn I gasp
To see its newborn child approach, straight-line for me
Swaddled in driven snow, and dripping freezing rain.

So I leave...

Slipping down the "Holiday hills", towards home,
Where the pointer now says it's near thirty five-
A drop of  twenty five degrees!...and I notice
The olive drabs, sitting tight in the fir trees;
They know to challenge the storms-child is fruitless
Learning from them, I go in the house...

Ford...you already know this subject facinates me....even more so after reading this poem.  I love the metaphor of the birthing of Goddess Weather.  I say, Wow!!  And also fantastic!  The way you write just takes my breath away.  I am so glad to be able to read this poem this sunny morning!

I found this interesting. It seem like a strange season this year. So I trust this is based on the oddities of winter time fishing?
Have a good day.

May the winds sweep through the moonless sky....

this was maticulously written and reminded me of Journal of a Trapper

I see in this a depth of self, an understanding of what is and nothing more...enjoyed very much.

There is an old movie called "The Trap" if you can get it, you might enjoy it.  Very well done.

this movie is old, and an experience, one will never forget....
thank you for this...

Thanks all, for the kind replies...

The thing that was birthed in the woods by Dame weather was real..It was the cold front coming in from the north...once ot broke through the woods, it moved very fast.
It was , what seemed like, a wall of rain and snow..driven by very high winds,,,a little bit of hail mixed in for spice..

An awesome sight...

Thanks again

~*~

I've enjoyed this read
several times now...

and you brought back a wonderful memory of some years ago, when my daughter and I were coming home from Emporia [to the East of us] and heading West, we were pell-mell heading into one of the blackest skies I had ever experienced in February...

at noon.

I think the both of us held our breath a bit - two women with only each other to count on [and a reliable car, thank goodness] and why was it I had decided to take the back roads that day, and not the worn route of I-70 homeward, anyway?

We drove into the slings of ice-stings and watched as sleet and wind went sideways instead of adhering to gravity...we slowed as our view became obscured by gray...and I prayed some road hungry cowboy wouldn't run his horses over my own team...

yes, yes...

this poem brought back some wonderful memories of that day from some ten years ago under a February Kansas skyway....

you've described exactly how I feel
each time I come here, fishing for a new post from your mind's pond

Nice write, kinda scared me.  Except the fish part. I love to fish. Ice fishing isn't my thing though.  I live in California by the beach and I count my blessings.

Ford, I am always awed by the way you pen your deep sensitivity and connection to nature.   ...jo
