Going Through Your Things

It’s time, I know, to make myself
do this thing.
Clothed in erect correctness and
sweat, I bring out what remains
of earthly you.

“Not yet”, I’ve said for too long.
“too soon, not yet, too soon”, but
today is a day, so like you-
full of subtle perfume and
bright beauty.
I’ll be strong if I can hold
to thoughts that you are here
to help me-
touch my shoulder if I
linger too long
over a thing of yours that
should not go
into the little box marked “keep”.
Let me know if I
fall too deep into your scent.
Remind me to move quickly through
and cull only those few nuggets
that made you golden.

It’s done now.
There by the door, the bags that go
to charity. To join the other
anonymous dead
on the sorting floor.

And here am I,
the dreaded day over-
weeping relief and grief at once,
drinking the tea that you loved,
and thinking that what we chose to save
was worth keeping-
that those were the things
you pointed to,
and that I couldn’t have done it
without you.

Constance,

This is one of the heaviest responsibilities left to us. I hope that with each touch, each fold, a good memory returned to you, and that someday, when you breathe in that "scent" so particular to your loved one, it will bring a smile to you.

Constance, I am living this ... some for the passing and other feelings for the abandonment and still other feelings in looking at photo albums I have been given so my Mother knows  someone will keep them...it's that kind of day for me, too.

Thank you, all of you, for such sweet responses. Honesty compels me to say that there are still some things, (videos of her and her journals and correspondence), which are kept hidden like contraband, just because I'm still too much a coward to view them.

I have been where you are, a very hard day for you my friend, but a start for a new tomorrow.
Removing the materialistic is all you have done, as the memories are alive inside you forever.

Big Hugs, Fee

A lovely memory and a tender poem.
