It came....
That last torrid day when the mirror laughed and
escaped the grip of he who counts unmercifully each
second of life...the measured tick banging against
an ear's drum.  Where might the flesh of a human’s
soul hide when the fetid breath stains the smell of
lilies?

I heard the echo of mocking eyes that laughingly
gazed, knowing the chagrin that hissed from the
clench of my gnashing teeth,   knowing that I could
not escape the grasp that held the squirm of my
arms, squelched the squeal of my tongue and
squeaked the mirror’s face....drawing that which
bound me...for life though ending....was yet just
beginning....  And thirty-nine  bid Adieu as middle
age cascaded over me and the forties promised
to move slowly....until a hand grasped and steadied
me....when five-oh snuck by...

Barry...It's true...the older you are the faster you get older...trust me on this.  You're still just a youngster!

At times, it does just that...

but there were other, deeper lines
that I saw carved into this bit
of insightful right....

the right to say to one's self...

dang, I did that, didn't I?

It's ok, too....

to tell yourself, "I'm sorry"...

you know the rest.

A never ending hum from the mirror as it sorts the illusions of age with knowing eyes...but the only reason 50 comes as a shock is because some youth we used to know told us it was old.  I find the older I get, the older Old gets, and that person looking back at me from the mirror has a lot of nerve usurping my place!  LOL

I liked this poem.     ~ Karen ~

"until a hand grasped and steadied

And it really does happen like that. I agree with Karen. Middle age is ALWAYS 15 years older than I am. It wokrs on a sliding scale I think. I love this poem!

Lllllllllove the poem, BUT:

I am SIXTY!!!! And yes, that is OLD - and OLD is GREAT and I love it!  I have silver-grey hair that I refuse to colour (it already has a colour) and I am the second-oldest in my office and I am healthier than everyone in the office (and everyone I know) and fitter than all except 2 who go to the gym every day.  I missed 2 days at high school - one for my grandfather's funeral and one for my grandmother's.  Yesterday the 17 year old daughter of a colleague had to call me, because I was walking too fast for her to catch up to me!  And I thought I was strolling!  Magnus, OLD is far more fun than being young.  You have a lot of fun waiting for you.  Carpe Diem!

Hugs and Happy Birthday for the actual day you turned 50 (you spring-chicken, you)!
