When the days are empty weeks into months
and the cycle no longer affirms womanhood
mind amplifies death’s whisperings
over the murmurs of soul
and gives for free to believers and me
a wrapped and delivered deep apathy.

It’s tied with string of despondency
and sealed with the will to die
but the paper crinkles and crackles
like the growing sounds of new life
and I stand a woman unnerved
by the enormous import of it all.

It’s mine today, this gift of the mind
only really a present and past
bundled into an uncertain view
of how to annihilate pain.

Dispensed to my shelf the pills of self hate
and they sit like a tempting seducer
waiting to grab and devour
my energetic spirit of power
growing weak and weaker, too weak
to remain the spark in my fire.

“Don’t succumb!  Don’t succumb, Mum!”
and we all know the children are love
blowing up, up, up, inflatable rafts
and sailing the weakness in one
straight to the point of remission
from mind’s deep apathy – you see?

Yes!  I do, Helen.  You are so right.  And, then, perhaps grandchildren, too!   ...jo

Thanks, Jo.  Children bring wisdom - grandchildren the fun because without fun wisdom is ... none!

Hi Martie!  It's okay to know about the children part but not mind's apathy - I don't wish that on anyone least of all you.

Oh, Helen, this aches. Despondency is like dying a looong, sloooow death. God bless our children whose smiles can be a source of sunlight to darken the darkest of days.

Sending you a big, loving hug,
Linda

A child or grandchild can bring out the smiles
even during our darkest hours.
Well said Helen..I felt this one.

I found there lives within me..
An invincible summer.
