at Santa Cruz
Monday morning
at 10
you will find
an egg yolk of clouded sun
hanging uncertain
mothers
their babies held close in slings
toddlers glissading at water’s edge
waves whispering
“Shhhhh…
don’t frighten the little ones”
the mothers sit on blankets
nurse the babies
hand out politically correct snacks
granola, gogurt, juice boxes
and chat
relieved they have made it
through another weekend
husbands, lovers, partners
have returned to work
leaving them with the sand, the sun
and the children
on the beach
at Santa Cruz
Monday morning
at 10
you will find
mother, babies, toddlers
and one old crone
wearing cuffed jeans
and a watch cap
sitting with her back against the bluff
drawing in the sand

Beautiful poetry Lady, very nice walk on the beach, the winter nearing the half way mark and today  the sun was in the sky a little bit it has what seems to be a month or so of cloudy days and snowy dreams ... but this return to the sea side and to draw in the sand once again....well this gave me hope and the little bit of a helping hand ..returning to the warm light that a day on the beach(  toes in the sand lol )can offer ....glad i read it !!! : ) ~wolfie

I need a vacation so bad right now, and it's simply impossible for me at the present time, so I thank you for the brief respite you offer here.

and?

glissading

that's one of those things I knew existed but never knew the term for, so thank you for that too...you captured that as well.

Enjoyed.

ohhhh how I love this description which best describes her....what a pleasant read...could hear the excited voices, feel the salt air, and of course, that effervesant sound of the old crone, lapping her full versed lips on the sand...

On behalf of the old crone, thank you for noticing her in the corner of your poem.  I hope some of the people on the beach did too and gave her at least a smile or two.  I loved your poem.

Wonderful!
I could actually feel the warm sand underfoot..
Beautiful imagery.

Idyllic...the thought of sunshine is so appealing midst all the winter rain.  I live near the beach, but summer is still a mere dream in the distance.

Such wishful thinking this provokes for this Klassy old crone!

Sun, Sea, Sand and babies... I love it, the imagery is fantastic. It makes me want to go to the beach, though i'm not sure you can get the same level of enjoyment wrapped up like a polar bear.

Great writing Kate, I really enjoyed the read.
