The chill challenged me to open my eyes.
Letting me know by change of climate that I was close.
I could always tell the difference.
Each city had its own distinct personification,
like a woman with her own scent.
You knew she was near before you ever set eyes on her
and if she were the right woman, she stirred more than your sense of smell.

I wondered if anyone out there still carried the scent of me
in their memory.

I shook my head as if the mere motion would erase the trail
of where my thoughts were taking me.
Like an etch-a-sketch, hoping the more I shook, the more diminished
the path to such thought became.
It never worked.

Thoughts of him were coming more often and more intensely these days.
I sighed, reflection of the old I supposed.
I wondered what happened to the usual solace found in the clatter of metal on metal.
If maybe it was time to stop using the train like the safe haven of a mother’s womb.

What was the point?
It’d been too long and this way of life, too familiar.
He had been so young; yet so brilliant in his innocence.
Knowing far more than I, at eight years his senior.
That first night I saw him looking it was like the fire had consumed me
sending the heat pulsating through my veins.
He was that beautiful and remembering brought the same flush to my face now, that it had then.

Remembering the feel of him sent a different kind of chill through me.
That proved more than I could handle at the moment.
So I tried to concentrate on what I would do and how long I would be staying
in Annapolis, and as the train rambled to a stop..

I thought I heard his voice, carried on the wind, calling my name..
“Alanna”

beautifully done

humorously adding...hmmmm, I remember once, while still married, hearing my husband call out in his sleep...Elise, Elise???  ...and we all know, that's not my name
