Back then,
I thought I had it all figured out.
My heart had done without
     long enough
     and hurt
     hard enough
that when it came to commitment,
          it was a practicality,
          based on logic,
          mutual need,
          some security.
Then
You came into my life.
(Or were you always there in my shadow?)
You really were not invited.
     Yet you came
      and woke my dormant heart,
the heart I thought had died.
You breath life into me when you say my name.
It is my soul echo, that place where you remain,
my name on your lips, yes that’s it.
I wonder when I speak yours
does it make a full eclipse?
My rationale escapes me –
     those years of believing
the only real love was that piece of paper,
          when two total strangers
can make a go of things if they believe they can.
(I heard in India that’s the plan.)
It’s just not the truth.
Not the truth.
There is more, so much more I don’t understand.

It took me by surprise
to find it now exposing lies.
Problem is:  pen on paper.
Wish I had the right eraser.

“Back then,
I thought I had it all figured out.”

Last night I was speaking with my daughter about how she acted and reacted when she was very young.  I fed her the old Dylan line that she was so much older then, she’s younger than that now.  Being swift to reach indigence, she did a classic hands on hips stance and threw back a defiant, “Well, that’s just not right!”

She made me smile.  Your poem did also; it is very well done.  Thank you for sharing it.

All I can say is you packed an awful lot into this poem..so much truth that it hurts.

milkweed,

I've read this several times, each time understanding and feeling more.  Your poem touched me deeply.  It sounds as if you question the logic of logic.   Good luck to you in your plight.
