simple things

after this
after the world, I mean,
whatever comes for us then,
shouldn't there be simple things?
things like grass I mean,
with some flowers in it,
oh, and trees
yes, some trees that shape themselves,
lean any way they want, gone free
or planted all straight in lines,
and brown leaves they've left
for us to walk through,
already soft for the coming rain?
the softening leaves, a scent of them
mingled with something sweet perhaps,
and maybe a lingering taste of fruit;
yes, wouldn't orange would be good then,
or a wisp of tangerine?
after this I mean,
after the world,
whatever comes for us then,
shouldn't there be such simple things?

Hard to know, but I suspect the feeling of all those things will be there.  You're a painter of the mind, Ed!   Happy New Year to you and yours!   ....jo

Ed, I have learned to look for the simple things in life now...not wondering about later.

It's amazing the freedom I can feel when I am in the middle of a "simple" life.

All of your simple things
are so complex
in reality...

but the sentiment is there,
as is the sharp tang
of tangerine...

Happy New Year, Ed!

There certainly should be. *S* I know we can't really know what to expect... but the simple things that give us such pleasure in the now should get to be there, too. *S*

I agree with iliana... you paint with your words... But instead of the tang of turpentine, you gift us with a hint of citrus... I lack the words for how much I love this... Beautiful work!!!

Ed, oh, I do hope there would be the simple things. It is the abundance of sweet simplicity that we take for granted until too late. Happy New Year dear, gentle, man.

Ed,

How good it is to see another poem from you!  You always wisp me away into a different plane of thought.  Perhaps from time to time, I've had similar thoughts, but you take me one step higher.  You do this tenderly and melodically, to boot!

My best wishes for a happy 2006.

Yes, Ed...there should be simple things.  Soft leaves and tangerines, maybe even the happy voices of children in a park.  These things are always there, we just don't always appreciate them.  I think I will do more of that.  Wonderful poem of reflection, dear friend.

I  really want to say yes... but the scripture says "...all things pass away, behold all things are become new." However, I can't imagine being without the sense of taste. I love eating a good steak and tossed salad. At any rate though, I'm sure God has that all covered and under control; He's a real planner, a real writer, and He's the author.

best wishes, dale

A heaven like the one the Bible hints at and Christian mythology (yes, we have myths we've made along the way, and our common view of Heaven is one of them)....that heaven would be a hell to me. Eternity in that place would be a dreadful thing that I can't imagine anyone wanting.

I'll take what we have now, pains and all...rather than streets of gold and endless endless singing in jasper palaces.

Ed, I want simple things in this life and the next. Beautiful gardens that take care of themselves, seas that churn and lull me to sleep, blood oranges that drip with sweet juice and bunny rabbits and deer that run free.

Thank you for awakening my imagination this morning.  ML

You are going to include cats, right... even if they'd deny they're simple... and dogs... and have them get along with each other... and if they can... humans can, too? *G* Can you imagine me happy in a world that didn't include our furry friends... or my graceless self trying to not slip on those streets of gold?? LOL Talk about hell!!! *S*
