it must be discussed
we shall not always be
sweet young things
with glace’ faces
and necks of smooth white marble

our eyes shall not always
reflect sunlight
nor shall our tumbling hair
always smell
river like
wet and teeming with life

how shall we be when this
time leaves us
and our necks are soft pleasant crepe
wrinkled into our collars

shall we be crabby old ladies
shouting at children who dare cross our garden
homey gingerbread women who wear aprons
and sing at church
crotchety old hags
sneering at shop people
our now bony noses turned to the air

none of these will do
girls such as we
life dancers
bare back riders
bright scarves floating on the wind

no
I think darling that
we have no option but to be eccentric

Such a great visual

"I think darling that

You're right...I'm already headed in that direction.

But but but... you have to be rich to be called eccentric. Poor old ladies can be smiling or crabby but they will always be called "old ladies".. So on with the Red Hats and happy faces, no one likes crabby old ladies..

My Dear, I love this so much! What a wonderful tone to growing old. I think that being eccentric is the only way to be! And I think that one of the best compliments my children, grandchildren and great grandchildren could pay me after I'm gone would be "She was very eccentric, you know." Gee, maybe I should write a poem about that!
