Ducks In Winter

Just this morning
While I was pacing fretfully
Around the room, unable to write,
Grumbling about winter, something happened.

A colorful parcel of ducks had descended
Suddenly, elegantly, on the front lawn.
The surprise of their iridescent beauty,
Overwhelmed me with happiness.

Weaving unevenly, in the dim winter light,
They covered the ground, like a shimmering blanket.
The easy energy of nature had released me
From the conscious weight of my own thoughts.

Then they disappeared, leaving prints
Of their webbed toes, in glorious patterns
Across the snow covered grass.

We cannot always calculate
An exact moment of clarity.
A single event, unexpected, transforms what follows.

And quite simply,
Everything falls into place.
