We shared a tree
on common ground,
a target of discord
in the courtyard square,
as to whether its predicament
of  being 'an unpretty one'
should doom its rite of passage
to continue standing,
though what i saw
was  simply
a contenance quite fair;

they said it made
too many berries
and it was a twitsed sister,
and dogs and teens
would putter through it
then wreck some havoc
and bomb the windows
with way too many
of its purple berries,

then one church lady
had asked me
if i would mind it,
if they cut the warped one,
then reconnect it
to the plainer side
at our development's rear,

so we debated, but
never got too far,
for they knew i'd never cut it
for simple reason
as what some
could only view
as a stature
of unsightly stare,

one son came home
from basic training,
and would soon be painting
on his war face,
a day past 20
his graduation
from boy to manhood

so i put a ribbon
on what some had called
the unsightly tree
on plowman's corner,

it sang americana,
red white and blue
with stars of 50,

i thanked the berries
and the branches
and the roots
and all that made it
the bearer of good tidings,
and at this moment
the proclamation
that a mothers son
had not yet faced combat
but instead
stood treeside
with us here.

Oh Jesus . . . this is beauty . . .

I saw so much in here, Michele, and good for you . . . so non-judgemental . . . you are truly a beautiful soul.

I loved the way you took care of the tree here,
Michele. You have such a connection with nature,
and I love it. This had a lot of meaning
in it, Hon, and I really enjoyed reading it.
Hugs,
Ethel

You do have a talent for saying what you mean in the most gut wrenching ways...

I am keeping this.

Beautiful inkedgoddess, I would guess that young man will always remember that tree as most special.
