Ageless Innocence

I laughed and tried to get a smile
by suggesting
the cafeteria was squeezing
those tears out of them.

It's surprising how soon we forget
the intent of children
picking on others.

Jokingly, I teased them into submission,
until whatever they were crying about
was forgotten.

In return
they played upon my sympathy,
quizzing me into revealing
my ageless seeming age.

Made them promise
not to reveal it to anyone else,
although they pretended to...
just to make me pout/frown.

And after trying
but failing to get my name out of me,
one fifth grader won my smile
by saying "I will just tell them it is
the pretty lady with the long hair"
who was the same age as his grandmother...
that made them laugh instead of cry today.

M (I volunteered extra time for cafeteria duty just because...)

"Love is not blind - It sees more and not less, but because it sees more, it is willing to see less."
