I have written poetry for
twenty years and I ask
What will I leave behind
when I have passed?

I've shared my deepest thoughts
let you peel away my shell
I have allowed you to look into my
soul, hiding nothing from you

I have painted countless paintings
with each line that you've read
Do you wonder what I am like?
can you shape me in your mind?

Greatness I am not, for I will not
follow Poe, Emerson or Dickenson
No, I have made my own path and
ask, will you remember me?

I leave you with few words, fewer
memories other then to ask
Will you tuck away a poem or two
and let my memory linger?

Our life in this world—
to what shall I compare it?

It is like a boat
rowing out at the break of day,
leaving no trace behind.

A poem is a chosen memory, you know....an experience chosen by the poet and often created entirely; chosen by the reader, who voluntarily decides to make that memory his own. I'm not Bertram, but I know Jane -- and better than he ever would have, had he existed.

YOU are going to be a welcome addition to this place! Happy first!

I used to argue the point too--with myself mostly.

But a really nice thing happened.

My daughter not only has a love of poetry--she likes mine.

That is all I need...

Enjoyed. And oh I do welcome a storyteller to Pip.

Welcome to Passions!  Poetry is a way of making all your moments memorable for yourself.  By writing you are giving attention to what is happening around you and what you are feeling about those happenings.  It's almost obligatory to share that with others and they will remember something even if not all of it.  Keep writing!

"What Will I leave Behind?"  A question I think most people ask, even if they're not poets.  To leave your words is a good thing, I think, and one of the reasons I write.  Welcome to Passions!!

Raymond,
It seems you have a pretty good reservoir from which to draw. Please note, as a story teller, that we have a prose section. Hope I find you there. And Welcome to Passions!

If tears could build a stairway and memories a lane,
I'd walk right up to heaven and bring you home again.
