Memories of Home
~ Linda L. Dowd ~

The earthy smell of fallen leaves,
Blends with smoke of hardwood fire,
Stirring memories of my youth,
~ Way back home in country shire.

The nakedness of oak trees bare,
Rich browns of brush and briar,
Denim blue spans Scottish landscape,
~Filled with song of magpie choir.

The dampness of the autumn air,
The smell of musty loam,
The russets of the rolling hills,
~Remind me of back home.

They are not my actual memories. I am of Scottish and Irish descent and believe my memories are more on a cellular level.

"Cellular level"....LOL I liked that. I felt that in my bones.

Or is it "halo-istic?"

Nice write, Linda.

You are an adorable nut bar!

Actually, to be rather scientific, there is evidence that memory is not only in the brain in our head. There are neutrinos throughout our body that retain memory. Some of that cellular memory is passed on from one generation to the next. I may not have ever been to Scotland, but the memories of my ancestors are in my neutrinos! lol

There are some interesting experiments that have been done with animals i.e. monkeys, on this topic.

Sorry for this heavy response to your light-hearted one! lol

Hugs to you, my fellow Canadian!

Ooh, beautiful.  I've been to Scotland and although it's not my home, I still feel a strong connection.  I think we often feel strong connections to certain places, even if we've never been there or only been there fleetingly.

I enjoyed the read!

Earth Angel, I love your poem, the picture and find your cellular/neutrino explanation extremely interesting.  I am also of Scottish and Irish (and English) descent, and have also never been to the UK.

Strangely today I drove past the house, the primary school, the high school, the Teacher's Training College and the University where I lived/studied - not purposely but in order to go to the shop where I buy my stationery - and I had very strong feelings of nostalgia.

iliana ~

I do so love the changing of the seasons. I do feel fortunate to live in an area where each season stands vibrantly on its own.

The variety of weather is invigorating. I enjoy all seasons but I also enjoy the anticipation of the following one!

I can understand how you miss your home far north from where you are. Soon the snow will be flying up here and I am looking forward to all the winter festivities! In the meantime, I am enjoying all the fall ones! lol

Hugs with love,
Linda

(sigh) Oh Linda, I too always have these semi-homesick feelings too every time I see a cottage or windmill or cornfield, dearest friend, as I grew up very much a country boy, and only within the last year and  ahalf have I been living in the city! (sigh) This is beautiful, sweet friend, it brings back many sweet memories indeed, we all love you so much! You have such a beautiful heart, sweet Linda, thank you for sharing!

May love and light always shine upon you!

We think of scents as being part of spring and the new flowers...but really, it's autumn that has the scents that stay with us forever. A tulip smells like a tulip, but the scent of the autumn leaves in your own yard....completely unique.

Linda, I have thought about this poem all weekend and it has had a profound impact on me! Thank you for evoking memories of long ago and far away.

I too am of Scottish decent. My paternal grandfather traveled from the home land and settled in New Brunswick, Canada before he journeyed to the states. I have longed to go to Scotland and hope one day to actually fulfill that desire.

In the meantime, you go and have a delightful journey and I look forward to hearing all about it from you.

~ and I lived in New Brunswick when I was a little girl! ~ on Shediac Bay, near Moncton. Was that any where near where your grandfather lived?

It pleases me greatly that I could evoke those feelings in you. Reading a response such as yours, adds meaning to my writing experience! Thank you, Lilacs!
