moving in the shadows of the fall
a lone pup journeys back up the mountain
shades of the moonlight reach him through the trees
giving glimpses of white and grey in the darkness
under pines that keep their green even in winter
the cold ice can only dream of a sunny day
opposites attract in the cool of november
making his way to an overlook
he has been here before in years now past
a stone ledge lightly covered in snow
the soft crunch of his paws on the powder
echo little memory's once forgotten
breath white in the open air
warm atoms swirl one last time before there frozen
his eyes now looking to the valley below
smoke floats from a cabins chimney so proud
the love only a fireplace or old wood stove can give on a night like this
a brief dance of snowflakes seem to sweep the cabin from sight
only to awaken the climb to the summit
before his turn from the ledge
a rather quiet howling was heard in the far winds whisper
new help from star beams reflect on the pathway ahead...
was it her the princess long lost
this wolf follows in the unfolded mystery
as the last days of autumn retire to winters bed
time slows and returns towards home
yet with precision unflawed the four little paws,
kept winding further up the mountain
on and on until he was above the clouds
eventually to its grand beauteous peak
where sight is almost limitless and the lakes reflect the stars in the sky
like diamonds in her eyes
only to find another of the same kind
her coat white with a little touch of silver by her eyes of blue hues
and as they sat beside each other on that high hilltop
they watched on with awe while the magic glows of the northern lights
tucked them in that lone wolf night

Loved the story / poem.

I greatly admire wolves; their proud, untamed spirit.

Over the centuries they have taken an undeserved burden of man's wrath - superstition, prosecution, extinction in some areas.

Is man afraid of something unyielding to his will?

I absolutely love reading you, the way you capture the beauty of the wild things, the natural world as your eyes interpret it then offer it to the reader.
Thank you!
I'll be keeping this one in my library.

Your poem reflects the indian side in you,

wolves are great hunters, they seek what they want and go after it.

enjoyed your story~
