"I did a little singing -some blues, Dixieland, and ballads - but the most important thing was the way I conducted the band,"

*  *  *

Are you hep to the jive?

The fish is snapping fins in time
with a stand of orchestra
grins expose a string of pearls
and that thing is quivering
at the back of his pink throat
neck in nod and wincing joy
"hi-de-hi-de-hi-de-o"
Man, I wanna be like him.
singing blissful tales of woe
swank before the glints of brass
sliding smooth of circumstance
glittering the lights of trance
wearing tears like chandelier
as the cymbals crash and pound
timely waves upon the shore
leaving us with bits of sound
shells of sea to resonate
in pink and white and black
and more
mermaid dresses ruffling
on that polished elegance
of a mirror-shine dance floor.

"yeah..."
he nods
his fattened lips
flatten 'neath the stress of this
colorblinded happiness
bobbing to the band he is

unaware of us
and them

dabbing with a handkerchief:

"Hi-de-hi-de-hi-de-I..."

Hey you!  Put your glasses on!  Here you go, there is the link to "The Man" and his word.  You did him proud

But all this time I thought you were?  You certainly have your very own lingo too, I know as I adopted many a word myself.

WOW!
What brilliant imagery,
m'lady I could see every single line unfold.

I could see him, the band, the dance floor the dancers in their mermaid dresses. The chandelier tears, omg..every line i tell ya is pure poetry.. I was there loving it all and the room was spinning all around me.

Sighhhh.

and Sharon? Thank you for adding that troublesome link for me--but it did occur to me that explaining the lingo was akin to "gettin' my glasses on" but it does help for folks to understand the title.

And Maree? You look lovely in a mermaid dress.

Love this .....

"Hi-de-hi-de-hi-de-ho..."

I feel, in this a lightning of the load that you have been forced to carry...this last while...the stress at least reduced for a moment to static...you have chosen a very good escape route, temorarilm, from heavy problems... just look at that face, how could anyone be sad whene you look at it....Thanks Cab for relieving for a few moments a friends pain...

While the moon and the clouds come spinning
Will you whisper my name again?

One of my all time faves, he played "Sportin Life" in Porgy and Bess.  I love that play and its music.  Thanks for bringing it to life for me.  Of all his gifts, I feel, his greatest was to be such a showman!   Best ken

I've a confession to make.

um

I listen to Cab...ALOT.

Not just cab, but oh man...

gimme show tunes, torch songs, blues--

I'm an anthorism. And yes, the man is pure gleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!

This is prolly the fourth or fifth tribute I've written for him.  He is my raspberry tea, my shot of cuervo--a cool breeze on a hot day.

Thanks all, for the audience participation.

from a blushing me with white gloves clapping ya'll, wishing wistfully I could dance...

thank you

Wilma may have washed the city away but she hasn't dampened your poetic spirits.  I enjoyed every word of it, Karen.

Something I picked up from watching Rose Marie on Dick Van Dyke.

to that hide-a-hoe beat

and you do so, in a wild array of words, transforming life into a

Serenity Blaze, I have never heard Cab Calloway's singing - well, not until I read your poem.  I agree, he has a wonderful voice and I will listen to it often, every time I re-read you magnificent poem.

Howdy Owl, and thank you for honoring me with a read and your time, so Welcome to Passions.

Would that my poem could do Mr. Calloway justice!

But I appreciate everyone's comments much.

And now? I think I'll put some "Cab" on--somehow I have managed to get myself in the mood.

With a little help from my friends.
