She asked me if I loved her,
And I said, I really do.
She asked me if I'd hold her,
Why, I would be delighted to.
She asked me if I'd promise-
That I'd never go away.
I dropped my head and told her,
That's the one thing I can't say.

I said, You know that I'm a cowboy-
And that's what I'll always be.
And a large part of my makeup,
Is my need for being free.
I love the western prairies,
The sage brush and the sand.
I could never be a lap dog...
And lick some master's hand.

I'll never punch a time clock-
I'm afraid to settle down.
My life is going down the road,
To win the next go 'round.
Motel rooms and pickup seats,
And small town rodeos-
May be a vicious cycle,
I guess that's the way it goes.

The story that I now recount-
Is not a recent thing.
The grey hairs I'm acquiring now...
New recollections bring.
Friends tell me that it's not too late...
Dawn brings another day...
The promise that a woman needs,
Is the one thing I can't say.

Well partner, I see you as an honest man, which is a dying breed, whether you're a cowboy or not.

Ah, my cowboy friend. You are so sweet.
You tell it like it was and is. I like that in a man.
Enjoyed the write.
hugs, Chris
