When evening comes
we check the doors and windows
twice, three times
as the elm that held the sun
turns its back
and dark leaves moan.

We lock ourselves in
against the black sky,
check the doors and windows
twice, three times.
The elm scratches at the
window,
we listen
sure of the creatures
hiding
just beyond the bed.

The elm clutches
at the lamppost,
we check the doors and windows
twice, three times.
We cannot lock out
the monsters of the night,
born in childhood nightmares.
They wake while we sleep
sure of the child
still in us.

"We cannot lock out
the monsters of the night,"

I guess that makes me sort of the loyal opposition.  *smile*

"Unless you become as a little child ..." so perhaps it's not a bad thing to have "the child still in us" in spite of the sometimes so very hard task of growing up that can breed "monsters".  Enjoyed this, Martie.

Sometimes my goal is to keep them out....sometimes, to lock them in.

But the child, yes he's there...in there with them, out there with them....there.

"We cannot lock out.." Such true words you speak for those of us who recall.  Well written.  Hugs Ken
