Silence swallows the soul as a gate
arcs outwards and a river of tears
lets her wallow in her own ache.

You, the one who helped conceive,
nurture, guide...missing from her
outstretched hand as the coolness
of your hand slips slowly away from
her struggling grasp.

You, the man, so tall above her, carrying
her skyward in your strength, allowing
her flight to land softly in your reassuring
grasp....never failing....ever giving...

You, the man, not just any man, but the
one man who would know the name of
a small child’s attempt at a spoken,
coveted word...

You, the shadow that loomed large against
the searing sun, that she might play, spread
cooling wet sands....smiling gleefully as
you stood...smiling so tenderly...until the
moment when you placed a slumbering,
drooling, pink cherubic face, hands, feet
softly into her bed...allowing the trust of
slumber to carry her into a field of dreams,
dreams that would last just one lifetime...
No more...no less...

And now, beneath that soil, freshly stirred,
you lie motionless, eyes closed to the world
you once knew....holding a priceless gift...
A gift tenderly tucked away....until eternity
awakens you....and you read, smiling, ever
smiling....words of a daughter’s love...
From an aching heart that shall never forget
you....

For a gift was exchanged many years ago
when she called your name....and tears
flooded a father’s eyes...as a daughter’s
eyes brim with the bitter brine of love...
once more.

There are many things
I know....

I know this wasn't for me...
but it felt like it.

I know it was for me...
because...

it felt like it.

It could be for any little girl,
who truly knew her father's love...

in the best of all ways...

always....

but it took the pen of a poet
to put it to light...
that it might live on.

For this?

I thank you.

Magnus,
You got me choked up here. For all kinds of reasons. It aches in ways I think I know. And it warms in ways that keep on giving, as do you. Thank you.

If tears could build a stairway and memories a lane, I'd walk right up to heaven and bring you home again.

Barry...I was so touched by what my sissie said up there, that I lost my own words.  I'll be back to make a reply later.

Barry..there are times you make me sigh
and times you make me cry..
then there are times such as right now..
you leave me speechless, with a lump in my throat.

Please forgive me...but I felt so strongly
about writing this....It could apply to either
sex...but it does not....

And when she reads this, she will know...
and heal...  Thank You, each of you...

And to each of you,   I understand...

It would require a blending of experience and observance to conceive the feelings that bestowed such a loving hand upon the hearts of those that have journeyed here.

How blessed we are to know such a tender man.

As a daughter I have to say that this has to be once of the most touching poems I have ever had a chance to read. Makes you stop and think. Thank you.

If I could have written this poem....

I was closer to being able to, after I'd read it. These lines are a gift to anyone who reads them.
