We were young
you loved tightly
the reigns always in check.
We raced past honeymoon night
into kids and bills
and cars that needed fixing.
My grocery-laundry day
became the only respite
from your constant controlling.
If they say that what we went through
was love, then it needed
a lot of growing.

Middle age cultivated
and stockpiled trespasses
until they blossomed into hate
and reprieve from time together
became preferable to harvest.
We died a thousand times
you and I, sometimes
by the other’s hand and sometimes
self inflicted.
If they say that what we went through
was love, then please,
lay to rest
the afflicted.

If this was love then say I
that love does die and yet live;
love does partake of cruelty’s cup
and remain athirst.
It can break and be broken,
and mend itself again;
love is able to withstand
a multitude of wrongs.
After all these years you and I
remain joined and so
if they say what we’ve been through
is love, then I
must
love you.

"We died a thousand times
you and I, sometimes
by the other’s hand and sometimes
self inflicted."

All those hard lessons, can make love stronger, but also not.  Interesting deduction in the end...logical thinking?
I understand how this works, and probably does in most relationships.

Spock would have agreed.  Logic, indeed.

Also shows a strong will not to be beaten,
nor used...
for even when the hurt was there...
somehow, it seems, there must have remained
some trust.

And...

trust doesn't grow on trees.

It's so good to see Karon writing...

Hi JB!
It is so good to be reading you again.
This one hit close to home..
sometimes we struggle so much we wonder if it's worth it.
Well said dear lady...well said.
Hugs~Nancy

A poem like this -- thoughts like these -- are so alien to me and so distasteful that I get a nearly physical pain from reading of them. It shames me, and makes me want to go wherever you are, kneel down and apologize on behalf of my half of our species, that one of us treated you so.

so so true, dearheart, your a stong willed woman...one whom I'm very proud to read...you say much in words of great passion, but not anger or grief...it's almost as if you understand him, and are willing to allow, to a certain point...and then all hell breaks loose for a while...a simple reminder....

Well done, very well done

Oh, sweetie, you are an honest lady!  This has to be one of the nearest things to the truth I've read lately!  Applauding you, for I do understand.   ....jo

“It's so good to see Karon writing...”  ah lady its good I guess for me as well to hear her voice, for a long time now she has been silent thank you lady

Nancy, thank you, sigh, I never thought about others who might relate, I just wrote it how it is……

Angel Heart, thank you

Suthern…it does put love in a different light doesn’t it? Thank you lady!

Ed, thank you, your response gives hope to all who relate, thank you for your apology, though completely unwarranted, and for your kindness

LeeJ, thank you for seeing me as strong , thank you

Iliana, thank you, my poetry is vexed with honesty, I cannot write it until it sits true in my heart

Gentle Spirit, yep I knew you’d understand, thank you
