with pigtails and giggles
zoe rode her tricycle and
when sharing provided her a turn
wore her daddy’s too big red cowboy boots
but zoe needed a father to say yes
to baby rabbits and I love you to his
baby girl…one birthday after another
she waited but zoe’s father was prone to
not coming home
and she learned to stop
waiting

zoe traded red cowboy boots for
patent leather high heels
and found a new father figure
to marry
he dotted her i’s and crossed her t’s
with demanded perfection
she longed for companionship
for someone to talk to
she ached for acceptance
but confronted by constant disapproval
zoe learned to stop
longing

zoe was broken
by the weight of this world-
she says now looking back-
but when at her lowest
when fallen to her knees
zoe found a Heavenly Father
who gave the life of His Son
to lift the weight of her worries
to give her a life brand new
zoe found a Father
who hears her heart’s beating
who listens even when she isn’t speaking
zoe found a Father that gave
life to hope and reason
to have faith
