If These the Smallest Can Then So Can We

A tiny thing
is white and gray
with tail curled under
on which to lay
hyperventilating breath
and heartbeat plain upon its chest

Reminder of the things that show
how life is
for the littlest know
finding a hiding place like this
takes some planning I say to it

Curled at back of dove’s keep
next to the wire and mother sitting eggs there
she looks but doesn’t blink red eyes
almost tame but still her instinct is
only for her babies to survive

Run her instinct says within her feathers feel
this creature’s teeth
can’t you see are sharp and real
and wire would not stop feral demand
for lunch of that under your breast of steel

As I watch in wonder this scene play out
the two who would be enemies out in the wild
sit face to face as if on life reflecting
and how the world could be with peace protecting
------
explanation

I have an aviary of doves in my back yard.  Between the glass in the back and the wire of the cage, a tiny rat has made a nest of feathers.

I know this feeling...of barest transparent minimum between me and heartbreak...though I've never kept doves. It's universal, and you capture it so very well.

So too, the universality of that dangerous thing and the vulnerable creature, finding equilibrium....something I also know all too intimately.

A beautiful write Martie, but I sure hope it is not a waiting game on the part of the rat To me a little rat is the beginning of a big rat, and at that point I would yell for Balladeer

Oh Martie, smiling wide here.

I can see her, the dove watching intently, the rat.

Always fantastic penning by you.

Ahh....

but I know the scene.  I've touched the screen...even fancied the wisp of the poet that writes...oh, the wisp is all around, too...

in all the rooms, in all of the books, in all of the air...

No wonder the rat found...

home.

She is but a mother...and just gives life.

Can you tell?  It is libraried...

Martie,
In observation, I have been the rat, the dove, and the writer. Where will the next wind blow? Thanks for this, it gives me comfort, just being able to connect.

Nature is such a wonder, isn't it Martie?
So well written! Much enjoyed.

Martie - you capture the scene most vividly but always through your words we can see.  I have many wild doves that hog the food and fight amongst themselves but never with the smaller birds. They seem to know they are the intruders because the small ones nest in the tree.  Rats?  No - I don't fancy them.  Wonderful right as usual.

I can very well 'see' the scene ...
through the eyes of you ... we see things we wouldn't ordinarily see~
Thank you dear poetess~

Martie
This reminds me of a poem I recently posted...
The lion will lay down next to the lamb..
The Rat next to the dove...
The Mohammedan next to the Christain

All kinds of pictures entered my mind when I read this, thanks for the visions...

I really enjoyed this.  We watch a very lively little squirrel in our back yard, that pleasures in teasing doves, other squirrels or anything.  He'll edge closer and closer until the other takes chase.  Then he goes like a streak of lightening.

(big angel hugs) Oh Martie, as always, your words always depict the wonders of the world sooooooo beautifully and make gorgeous art out of them, yay! (smiles) Often it is said that when something happens it is "just nature's way" and I guess poetry is meant to challenge that dogma, LOL, God Bless You, we all love you so much! You have such a beautiful heart, sweet Martie, thank you for sharing!

May love and light always shine upon you!

Love,
