Being born plain
With nothing
Though young
In the mirror
To recommend her

It must have come
As something of a surprise
To be asked to pose

For what was it then
That this artist saw
Yet still in a face
Nearly worn to frown

By the day to day drudgeries
Losses to life as it is

Who did he see
Yet worth the paint on his canvas
That pink on lines like scars
As ran from the eyes

Or would cause any man
She would never know
To pause and remember sadly

Such stolidly resigned
Surrendered features
Again with the ink from his pen
