the morning is caramel with warm laughter
I reach into the bowl of dawn with my eyes
and watch long sleeved nightshirts
become rolled up determination
to linger as gasping effort recollections

like the cloths lines behind the soggy's
where the dark skin people put their colors
to give em some smelly good yella

the junk yard kitty has blackie on the medal
he won for killing a spark plug wire
when he was hunting snakes in chevy 66'
jorge got the friskies down and the spoon
that gives ol toothless his belly fix mixture

there will be a parade in my shoes today
the flags have lined up their pretty backs
for scratching on my pine post corners

and ol' jud got a new jug of misery
to sip his whistle on tween the howdy's
and the usedtoo's of when he had his prime
and e-nuff gumption to get the bad stuff done
before the church man drove up in his caddy

momma loved those trees by the burying hole
she said they were big hair people in spring
and sickly ol drifters when winter chilled em
said some day she would have one of her own
that she could come talk to at everyday thirty

like she does now when she brings me flowers
