...couple of things from long ago  - handwritten if you believe people ever did that!!

A Drum in Time

Footsteps echo in the dark – receding.
I wish for rain – it always rains in sad movies.
Cold rain - parody of a heart in need of warmth
only advancing footsteps can give.

But it’s not – raining.
It’s not – cold.
The footsteps are leaving, fading –
high-heels clicking down the walk –
evenly spaced – fading clicks.

My heart beats in time –
evenly spaced – fading beats . . .
I wish it would stop when they do.
But it beats on – evenly spaced,
a drum in time with the last of the steps I hear.

Last of the Line

I shed autumn tears
for the years that are gone,
the memories that fill the space they left,
glistening yellow and red tears,
colored by flashing neon lights
on the sign across the street.
Red and yellow,
like autumn leaves – falling,
only I won’t be reborn in spring.
Youth doesn’t return at my age,
neither do the friends,
or the family that has passed,
nor do  the smiles of the young
when they look at me –
they don’t care to see the future yet.
Not the grayness, the wrinkles,
the hobbled knees and hands,
the almost sightless eyes.
They don’t want to see the waiting that comes
when nothings left –
they don’t want to know what happens
when you’re the last of line.

Keepin' these in my library and close in my heart Jimmy.
Yes...I still use a paper and pen to create with.
hugs, Chris

There is something special about creating a piece of poetry with the almighty pen placed on paper. This poem has that special something!

JWesley,

I thought I'd pass the time catching up on writing many delinquent posts to those at PIP.  I'm afraid this is my first and last poem this evening because this one is so excellently written and thought provoking!  (I'm sure I'll want to visit this again in my library!)  If it is any comfort to you, we're all in that aging boat together!

James?

I can see the handwriting...

and it was in pencil, too,
wasn't it?
