When she gets in your face screaming,
waving angry fists of frustration,
wears the look of desperation...

all you can do is take two steps back
and breathe, breathe, breathe
  slowly
as you think backwards
to when you were a small child,
frustrated beyond belief,
remembering the last time
you felt like a helpless cornered animal
and the solutions to your problems
were no where on the visible horizon
and not in your native language of understanding

that's when the closeup sight
of the whites of her glaring eyes
no longer frightens or intimidates,
doesn't make your knees lock up
or your stomach tighten in defense
or anticipation of a possible battle

~that's when the sins of the rotten apple tree
fall close to the ground~
and you recall asking more than once,
how did we all fall from sanity and grace?
(no matter whether you believe or not
those stories of old you were told)

but when she looks at you with anger and despair
you must respond with understanding and kindness;
later you can go make an apple pie,
have a good cry as you ask God

Why?

Thanks for your reply, and concern. I'm OK.
It's about another fragile soul, a developmentally disabled adult who suffered abuse and knows no other way to communicate her frustrations than to get in my face and scream. I've gotten over being fearful of her outbursts, though she has the potential of being dangerous so I must be careful.
It's about keeping my distance...keeping just enough space between myself and the angry one, while being able to close that gap and give her a hug when its appropriate, when her behavioral posture cues allow one.

Bless you, Kacy:

Your vocation has many sharp rocks in its road...dealing with what seems unfounded anger is more like a boulder in the path...but by reading this poem, I am made aware that loving thoughts help you crush the stones to sand...although I am quite sure that you sometimes think them as impassable hurdles.

Thank you for writting your thoughts...

Kacy,
Bless your giving heart, a lot!

If tears could build a stairway and memories a lane, I'd walk right up to heaven and bring you home again.

Kacy

Such understanding you have of the space between love and too much.

Yes~~
I have learned that it is not what I am doing or have done to get those reactions from those I work with/around but their need to release...and when it gets to be too much you must distance yourself even if only temporarily

Kudos to you for your ability to work with those who so desperately need you, yet can be so trying.  Great story and well told.  Ken
