Once a year
birthday boy wakes up
a clear head guides the senses
morning activities dawn
propensities established
activated

Wake up further
once a year
I can afford to be special
simple happiness with close friends
a piece of cake
morning call for coffee before that
way before the cake and fanfare

Closer to a decent job this year?
nearer to success I mean
where western money buys freedom
never mind the 9 to 5 trudgery
once a year
begins with a morning coffee call
cake and fanfare will ensue
I can afford to be special to friends
afford to make future amends.

Closer to a satisfied heart
ambition at peace with destiny
matters of the heart subdued
that age now supersedes beauty
past youth accepts an older shelter.

Birthday candles are in constant glow
birthday boy lets his wit flow
a day a time, a new measure?
no, year by year at ones leisure.

I can afford to be special
one day...one birthday
a day closer to a finite end
towards frantic future amends.
No wait! why must I invite an end
I haven't yet begun to sing..
let everyday be a festive spirit
an ounce of self-indulgence
something special...
